By the doorstep
One of the things I love about the process of building our own house is looking through pictures, in a time.travel kind of way, to see things once again the way they were before.
Once we get a project going and finished, it’s easy to forget how it used to look before we started. We get used to the final look of things and feel that it’s always been that way.
So this morning, while I was looking through my camera’s memory card (which had 8 months of pictures - welp!) and found these, I thought they were worth sharing. Both for us, to remember, and also for you, on that side of the screen, because if you’re around here you most likely are into gardening and house-making.
There is Sam in late summer (or maybe early autumn?) arranging the stone steps that lead to our house. We had finished building the flower bed on the left a few weeks before, and the one on the right was just a couple days old.
Poles up! We cut down some eucalyptus trees to make pergolas around the house. There’s more than one, wait for it…
For now, we’re letting the wood dry in place until spring. By then, we’ll finish them by adding all the upper pieces. Can you see the passionfruit plant eagerly waiting to grow up and crawl all over it?
Here’s the front of the house, looking all leveled. That beautiful oak tree is the king of this place.
Since we’ve started building the kitchen, this is now the entrance to the house. But more on that soon… I’ve been enjoying the ‘secrecy’ of building this time around without the joy/pressure to share every detail as we move on.
Let’s move on to new beds and the second pergola, which is the view we have once we step out of the kitchen door.
These ones are now home to four kiwi plants, a lemon tree, an orange tree I’ve accidentally grown from seed, lavender plants and some other bushes.
(Please don’t ask me why is my daughter wearing a dog collar as a headband, because I have no freaking idea.)
That’s it, my friends.
There, you can have a sneak peek into the house + the stone steps Sam carved to enter the bedroom, on my left. Behind me is the aloe plant I’ve been nurturing for six years, and that last year had her first babies. Proud mama here! I’m waiting to see if she likes this south facing wall during this year’s winter, before planting her out of her pot-home.
Have a wonderful December, folx!
